Workforce Solutions Alamo CEO Discusses Economy and Jobs

SAN ANTONIO – There has been a lot of talk about the economy, interest rates and jobs, but what impact are we seeing here in our community?

Adrian Lopez, CEO of Alamo Workforce Solutions, joined Leading SA to explain the employment landscape and programs to find jobs.

“Today, we are at around 4% unemployment. Before the pandemic, there were about three and a half percent. We’re seeing strong growth in all the major industries that we actually support. If you look at Texas we’re on par with what’s happening in unemployment levels with Texas from about May 2021 to May 2022. Texas added about 750,000 jobs locally here we probably added about 50 more than a thousand jobs. And there are a lot of really good wins in all the sectors that we support,” Lopez said.

In some parts of the country, there are more people than jobs. Here in our region, there seems to be a skills gap.

“In this region, we actually have a ratio of 1 to 5, which means that for someone retiring, there are actually five people available to fill these positions. But again, it’s really a lack of skills,” Lopez said.

San Antonio is one of the areas of the country that has benefited the most over the past two years, with more businesses locating here and expanding. This influx of opportunities has led to more jobs.

“We benefit from companies relocating from other parts of the country and beyond, even overseas. I think in Texas and where last year about 70 large companies moved to Texas for that area…. They’re creating, you know, a couple thousand jobs in the next 12 to 18 months. And those are very high-paying jobs, you know, high-paying jobs,” Lopez said.

To help as many families as possible, there is a new partnership between Workforce Solutions Alamo and the San Antonio Food Bank.

“We see the number of thousands of people queuing to ask for food aid and our most vulnerable time, that’s where we want to be. And that’s what this partnership really represents. The power of the partnership between Workforce Solutions Alamo and the San Antonio Food Bank. So we have a satellite office now operating there. So when people receive food and sign up for benefits, they also have the option of receiving services from Workforce Solutions Alamo,” Lopez said.
